CER Hungary considers soft expansion

CER Hungary: Private rail freight operator plans to establish container services

After five years of activity as a private operator in rail freight transport, focussing the transportation of conventional loads in block trains, CER Hungary Zrt. (Budapest) is targeting new market segments. The company’s management is currently evaluating the opportunities to expand the operating range to Italy, Bulgaria and Turkey. Moreover they consider starting container transportations on the west-east corridor, such as from the Port of Koper to Moscow and return.

The Hungarian private operator started its activities in 2005. “At the beginning we carried out coal transportations from Bükkábrány in northeastern Hungary to the power plant in Visonta, 40 kilometres away. The volume of this first contract was about 400,000 tons. Shortly after that the company succeeded in successfully entering international traffic“, Managing Director Dr. István Bárány outlines the company’s development.

Today the commitment to national traffic is limited to the transfer of unloaded import trains to new loading stations. The key activities are international transportations with block trains. Transport volume in 2009 amounted to 1.17 million tons.
