Eurogate and HHLA plans jointly operated hinterland terminals

Port logistics groups Eurogate and HHLA close ranks in hinterland by forming a joint venture

The port logistic groups Eurogate and HHLA intend to form a joint venture of their intermodal subsidiaries in Germany and set up full service-hinterland terminals and depots for container traffic from and to German seaports. The Federal Cartel Office gave the green light for this project. Thus all requirements are met to establish an equally-owned joint enterprise of Eurogate Intermodal GmbH and HHLA Intermodal GmbH.

In the initial stage the joint venture is aimed to develop terminal concepts, test location concepts, set up facilities with integrated depots and market them if required. The target is to sustainably improve conditions for maritime transport and logistics chains in the hinterland of the German seaports.

Sebastian Jürgens, Member of the HHLA Executive Board, responsible of the Intermodal and Logistics segments says: “With our concept we strengthen the competitiveness of German seaports, because we connect them in a more intelligent and better way with the hinterland. This goes just in line with the government’s national harbour concept.“ Emanuel Schiffer, Chairman of the Eurogate Management: „We want to extend the high quality standard of the German seaports to hinterland terminals. HHLA Intermodal and EUROGATE Intermodal bring in their know how to improve maritime logistics chains, which will be a profit to the whole logistics industry.“

Eurogate and HHLA plan to establish terminals with integrated depots. While facilities have so far been designed to meet requirements of continental transport, the full service-hinterland terminals shall focus on today’s and future requirements of the growing container transport volumes of global transport chains. Equipped with integrated depots the facilities can offer warehousing capacities in the immediate vicinity of the target markets. “With our specialised terminals we bring the seaport closer to the customers and the industry“ – that is the key message of the enterprise.
