Automatic fire protection system for FedEx Express aircrafts

FedEx Express presented the world’s first automatic fire protection system for aircrafts. The technology named Fire Suppression System (FSS) improves the security level fort he crew and the load on international flights crossing waters. The fire protection system is the result of a seven-years development process at FedEx Express.

In April 2009 FedEx Express has started to install FSS technology to freighter machines of the MD-11 type. Each installation requires about 700 man hours. The equipment of all 59 MD-11 machines shall be finished at the beginning of 2011. Moreover, FedEx plans to install the new FSS technology on board of the new Boeing-777 freight machines, which will be operating on international routes from spring 2010. FedEx wants to equip 74 wide-boy aircrafts with the new technology.
