Lufthansa Cargo agrees on short-time work

Lufthansa Cargo fronts economic crisis with short-time work

By March 1, 2009, around 2,600 employees from the ground staff of Lufthansa Cargo AG (LCAG) in Germany will be affected by short-time work. The Executive Board and Works Council signed the corresponding company accord Thursday in Frankfurt/Main. The measure will allow the company to adapt staffing capacities flexibly to accommodate declining demand for air freight services. At the moment the company accord will be valid for 12 months until February 28, 2010.

The agreement determines that all tariff and non tariff ground personnel will work 20 per cent less. Lufthansa Cargo grants 90 percent of the last net-salary for short-time work. Dr. Roland Busch, Executive Board Member Finance and Human Resources, gave some details about the accord: “Lufthansa Cargo will flexibly apply short-time work within the scope of the agreed company accord. As soon as the air freight market recovers, we will be able to ease or even abandon the measure. If the demand for air freight capacities continues to fall sharply, we are also able to adapt short-time work to this situation.”

At the moment the boards of the cockpit-staff are negotiating the same issue. As from the beginning of the short-time work also managers and members of the executive board will also forgo salary voluntarily.
