Russian RZD founds second cargo railway

OAO Vtoraya gruzovaya kompaniya to establish as a universal overall network service provider with an own fleet

A new provider appears in the Russian market of freight transport by rail. The Management of the Russian Railways has approved the establishment of the subsidiary OAO Vtoraya gruzovaya kompaniya (second cargo railway, VGK short) last week. Against the background of the rail infrastructure reformation, the new company is aimed to stimulate the competition in the field of rail cargo transport.

OAO Vtoraya gruzovaya kompaniya will be set up as a universal overall network service provider with its own rail vehicles. The new enterprise will be active in single wagon and block train traffic in Russia. Forwarding and logistics services shall complete the portfolio. The share of VGK at the total rail cargo transport in the Russian Federation is expected to rise to 22 per cent until the year of 2015. The share capital of the company amounts

to 46.4 billion rubles (about 1.5 billion USD).

According to Russian Railways the establishment of the rail cargo subsidiary will not have any effects on the client structure. The major customers of rail transport services will still be industrial and raw material enterprises (coal producers, metallurgy enterprises, petroleum holdings, construction groups and producers of mineral fertilisers). The cooperation of VGK and Russian Railways will be based on market economy principles.
