Ten per cent growth in container throughput at Port of Rotterdam

Port of Rotterdam registered a slight increase in total throughput volumes in the first half of the year 2010 thanks to general cargo“:

The Dutch seaport of Rotterdam is steering on a growth course in container transport. In the first half of the year 2011 about 6 million TEU were handled at the terminals. This is a ten per cent-increase compared to the previous year. “Handling of containers increased incoming and outgoing by, respectively, 15.8 per cent and 9 per cent“, the Port of Rotterdam Authority informs in its interim report. In weight, total container throughput increased by 12.3 per cent to 61.8 million tons. The handling of conventional cargo increased significantly by 27.7 per cent to 4.1 million tons, which is especially thanks to the handling of steel plates and coils, paper products and cellulose.

In the period from January to June 2011, 215 million tons of cargo were handled in the Port of Rotterdam, 1% more than in the first half of 2010. Incoming cargo increased by 2 per cent to 153 million tons, while outgoing cargo decreased by 1 percentage point to 61 million tons. The throughput of bulk cargo fell to 140 million tons. General cargo improved 12 per cent at 75 million tons. Roll-on/roll-off transport gained 5.6 per cent and carried 8.8 million tons.
