Considerable investments at Port of Rostock

10 per cent more cargo throughput at Port of Rostock in the period from January to June 2010

The port development company Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock has launched an ambitious investment program. In 2010 about EUR 35 million are budgeted for measures to modernise and expand the facilities. Around EUR 20 million thereof will be used for the northern expansion of Pier III. The major project shall be finished before 2012. Further building projects this year are the renovation of berth N° 5 and the service platform at berths 3 and 4 at the oil port for around EUR 2 million, the completion of the 200 metres long heavy haulage berth N° 25 for about EUR 5 million and the start of construction of the eastern road connection to the industry park near the harbour area for around EUR 2.5 million.

These projects are launched against the background of the increasing freight volumes. In the first half year of 2010 about 12 million tons of goods (gross) were handled at Port of Rostock. This is a 1.1 million tons or 10 per cent increase on the same period last year. “The world economy is in an upward trend. We assume to carry on with the 2008 figures in 2012“, says Ulrich Bauermeister, Managing Director of the Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock mbH.

From 11.1 million tons of goods handled at the seaport of Rostock, 6.2 million tons were rolling stock of the ferry and ro-ro traffic. This segment posted a gain of 300,000 tons or 5 per cent respectively compared on the previous year. Thus ferry and ro-ro cargo made up 56 per cent of the total throughput at the universal port of Rostock. 44 per cent (4.9 million tons) were the handling of bulk, liquid and general cargo, which is an increase of 600,000 tons or 14 per cent on the first half of 2009.

The terminal for combined transport showed a rise in handled freight units from 30,671 to 34,517 (up 13 per cent). Tonnage showed a slight decline from 645,707 to 630,345 (down 2 per cent). Every week 26 intermodal trains were operated from and to Verona (13), Basel (5), Duisburg/Hamburg (6) and Wels (2).
