Hamburg remains Austria’s “stronghold“ in container traffic

Container volume in the Port of Hamburg showed slightly increasing volume in traffic with Austria in 2012; new train service from/to Graz

In 2012 the Port of Hamburg was able to defend its top position in container traffic with points of departure or destination in Austria. At 289,000 TEU the figure was slightly above the previous year’s volume of 288,000 TEU, concedes Axel Mattern, executive board member of Port of Hamburg Marketing, on May 6 during a major event of Hamburg’s port industry in Vienna when talking to the Austrian transport magazine Österreichische Verkehrszeitung. “With regard to the stagnating market in Austria we are satisfied with this volume“, he adds.

According to Alexander Till, Port of Hamburg Marketing Representative in Vienna, container traffic with Austria via Hamburg was slightly dominated by exports in 2012. The lion’s share of shipments was transported on the railway. There are currently 74 weekly block trains (37 rotations) operated between the port facilities in Hamburg and the container terminals in Austria. Since a few days ago the Austrian container operator IMS is also calling Graz, thus linking Styria’s capital to Hamburg several times a week.

Also reputable shippers of conventional cargo have handled big volumes via the port of Hamburg and its transhipment facilities in 2012 again. They include the companies Rosenbauer, Plasser & Theurer, Siemens, Andritz, Voith Paper, Bauer, Engel and Ebner.
