HHLA is testing E-mobility for container logistics

Premiere of battery-powered Automated Guided Vehicles at the Container Terminal Altenwerder of Hamburg’s HHLA group:

The first battery-powered, emission-free and driverless container transport vehicles are tested at the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). Vollert Anlagenbau provides a fully automated battery change station for a quick and regular change of the battery containers hat have a weight up to 12 tons. The station was developed in cooperation with Gottwald Port Technology GmbH.

In the first stage Vollert’s battery change station was a proto type fort wo Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and four battery containers to test functionality and reliability of the E-mobility concept of Gottwald Port Technology GmbH in the container terminal area. According to the producers battery-powered AGVs are environmentally friendly and – given rising fuel prices – offer a great potential to reduce operational and hence economic potential. The HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder plans to introduce further battery-powered AGVs and enlarge the battery station accordingly once the testing stage is finished successfully.

HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder in Hamburg is known as the world’s most modern. Around 90 driverless diesel-hydraulic and diesel-electric driven Automated Guided Vehicles of Gottwald Port Technology GmbH, a subsidiary of Demag Cranes AG, secure the automated and quick container transport between the quay wall and the container warehouse. A possible change to battery-powered AGVs to reduce exhaust and noise emissions is being investigated.
