Ökombi reports 40 years of Rolling Road in Europe
Rolling Road in Europe is still up to date for Ökombi The Rolling Road concept celebrates its 40th anniversary in Europe. On 1 October 1969 the first European ROLA course pair had been operated between Cologne and Ludwigsburg (near Stuttgart). “Many have only seen the Rolling Road as a first step to establish unaccompanied combined transport and considered it being of temporary importance. But the fact that more than 85 per cent of all truck bodies for long-distance transport can’t be lifted by crane, and about 83 per cent of all hauliers own less than 10 own long-distance trucks, makes ROLA one of the few alternatives to long-distance cargo transport on the road“, writes Ökombi in a paper. The RCA subsidiary is not worrying about the future of ROLA. “Longer and heavier ROLA trains, modern low-floor vehicles and attractive coaches (couchette) will secure competitiveness of the rolling road within rail cargo transport in the future as well“, the Management gives an outlook. However, they do not hide that there are continuously changing framework conditions for truck transport (keywords: increasing truck tolls, digital tachograph, sectoral bans on driving etc.) which bring advantages to the economically friendlier transport system.
