Considerably less containers at Eurogate Group

Declining industrial production caused difficulties for Eurogate Group in 2009

The clearly declining transport volume in international freight transport caused heavy business losses at German locations of the Eurogate Group in 2009. The total volume in Bremerhaven and Hamburg fell 18.5 per cent on the previous year, to 6.674 million TEU. At the location Bremerhaven 4.5 million TEU were handled (minus 17.5 per cent). In Hamburg the volume decreased 20.5 per cent to 2.1 million TEU.

The Contship Italia locations reported a more moderate down of 9.9 per cent to 5.14 million TEU, which is due to the positive development of the throughput at the Cagliari International Container Terminal. Including the terminals in Portugal and Morocco the total volume amounted to 12.454 million TEU, which is 12.3 per cent less than in 2008.

Thomas Eckelmann, Chairman of the Eurogate Group Management Board, commented on the business development as follows: “The economic crisis has left its traces. Nevertheless we will post a positive result for 2009. However, it will take some time before we will be able to reach the record level of 2008 again. We try to encounter the current situation by changing our cost structure and improving our service quality.“

Eurogate is the leading container terminal logistics group in Europe. The network operates together with Contship Italia ten container terminals from the North Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. A new sea terminal in Wilhelmshaven is currently under construction. The portfolio is completed by intermodal services and specialised logistics management.
