DB Schenker and TransContainer planning to set up container hub in Riga

New initiative of DB Schenker and TransContainer to optimise East traffic

DB Schenker and TransContainer, the cargo subsidiary of the Russian Railways RZD, are planning to jointly set up a container hub in the DB Schenker Logistics park in the capital of Latvia – Riga. The new handling plot is supposed to increase efficiency of container transport between the economic regions in the Baltic States and in Scandinavia, as well as between Russia, Central Europe and Central Asia. In Riga the two partners intend to offer their customers multimodal international transport services and thereby develop step-by-step targeted rail container services.

“The partnership with TransContainer is the first of its kind for Schenker Logistics in eastern Europe. We want to collect knowledge in Riga to be able to provide our customers further attractive combined cargo transport services in the future“, explains Karl Nutzinger, CEO Land Transport at Schenker AG. The SIA Schenker terminal in Riga will be used to load containers from rail to road and vice versa, and to consolidate international cargo. The alliance with TransContainer also includes the use of its containers across the borders of Latvia. The freight units are loaded to the Russian broad gauge.

Also customs formalities will be handled directly at site. This saves waits at the border – as opposed to truck traffic – and shortens transport times. The cargo trains pass the border between Latvia and Russia within a few hours, whereas trucks might have to wait several days being caught up in traffic jams before entering Russia. The short transit time on the rail is a result of the pre-declaration of goods and the previous issuing of the required documents. Destinations in central Asia and western Russia are therefore within shorter reach.
