Drastic cuts at DHL Express in the U.S.

DHL Express decided to exit from American domestic business

Deutsche Post World Net is responding with far-reaching measures to the losses in the US express business. CEO Dr. Frank Appel announced the withdrawal from the U.S. domestic air and ground business at the beginning of the week. The closing of these operation is to become effective by the end of January 2009. However, the international products of DHL Express USA will remain unaffected by these measures. Mr. Appel referred to these services literally as „indispensable component of the global DHL Express network „.

Due to the withdrawal from the American domestic business, the number of sorting centres of DHL Express USA is reduced from 412 to 103. This is combined with the reduction of 9,500 jobs; in addition to 5,400 jobs that were cut since the beginning of this year. The costs for the reorganisation amount to EUR 1.5 billion. Due to the concentration on international business the operative costs of DHL Express USA will decline from EUR 4.2 billion to EUR 770 million per year.
