Port of Hamburg sees signs for moderate uptrend

Substantial decline in ocean freight throughput at Port of Hamburg

Representatives of the Port of Hamburg register signs for an uptrend in ocean freight throughput in the second half of the year. “Present monthly turnover figures already show us a slight up in container traffic between April and June and thus that the economic downturn stopped. We also received positive signals from representatives of trade and industry, from leading managers of the transport and the shipping industry“, Claudia Roller, CEO of Hamburg Marketing, disclosed last week.

In the first half of 2009 Port of Hamburg registered a year-on-year down of 23.7 per cent in ocean freight throughput to 54.2 million tons. Export volumes declined 19.9 per cent to 24.2 million tons. Import volumes amounted to 30 million tons, which is 26.5 per cent below last year’s level. General cargo volume amounted to 37 million (minus 27.8%), while container traffic showed a 28.7%-decline to 3.6 million TEU.

Bulk cargo handling dropped 13.1 per cent to 17.2 million tons. Liquid loads declined 1.1 per cent to 7.1 million tons. The suction material unit, which is dominated by cereals exportation, grew 38.6 per cent to 4.1 million tons.
